Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-220 General duties.

2-84-220 General duties. The members of the police force of the city, when on duty, shall devote their time and attention to the discharge of the duties of their stations, according to the laws of the state and ordinances of the city and rules and regulations of the department, to preserve order, peace and quiet and enforce the laws and ordinances throughout the city. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-230 Power of arrest - Service of warrants.

2-84-230 Power of arrest - Service of warrants. The members of the police department shall have power: (1) To arrest or cause to be arrested, with or without process, all persons who break the peace, or are found violating any municipal ordinance or any criminal law of the state; (2) To commit arrested persons for examination; (3) If necessary, to detain arrested persons in custody overnight or Sunday in any safe place, or until they can be brought before the proper court; and (4) To exercise all other powers as conservators of the peace as are provided in this Code. All warrants for the violation of municipal ordinances or the state criminal law to whomsoever directed, may be served and executed within the limits of the city by any policeman. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-240 Process serving.

2-84-240 Process serving. The members of the police force shall have power and authority and it shall be their duty to serve and execute warrants and other process in the city for the summoning, apprehension, and commitment of any person charged with violation of any provision of this Code, or with any crime or misdemeanor, or offense against the laws of the city or state. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-250 Aid to fire department.

2-84-250 Aid to fire department. It shall be the duty of members of the police force to aid the fire department by giving alarms in case of fire and by clearing the streets or grounds in the immediate vicinity of a fire, so that the members of the fire department shall not be hindered or obstructed in the performance of their duties. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-260 Street openings and excavations.

2-84-260 Street openings and excavations. It shall be the duty of every police officer, on observing or being informed of any opening or excavation in any public way, to require the person making such opening or excavation to exhibit the authority or permission therefor. If none has been given by the proper officer, or if such exhibition thereof be refused, such police officer shall without delay report the same to the commissioner of transportation. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-270 Notice of sidewalk defects.

2-84-270 Notice of sidewalk defects. It shall be the duty of all policemen to report to the commissioner of streets and sanitation all defects in sidewalks, and in case of accident they shall report the same to the corporation counsel together with the names of any witnesses to such accident. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-280 Violation of duties - Discharge from service.

2-84-280 Violation of duties - Discharge from service. Any member of the police force who shall refuse or neglect to perform any duty required of him, when such refusal or neglect to perform any such duty shall tend to hinder, obstruct, or impair in any way the proper and strict enforcement of any law or provision of this Code or the efficiency of the police force, is hereby declared to be no longer qualified to be a member of the police force, and shall be discharged from said police force and the service of the city in the manner provided by law. Municipal Code of Chicago § 2-84-290 Additional penalty authorized when.

2-84-290 Additional penalty authorized when. Any member of the police department who shall neglect or refuse to perform any duty required of him by the provisions of this Code or the rules and regulations of the department of police, or who shall in the discharge of his official duties be guilty of any fraud, extortion, oppression, favoritism or wilful wrong or injustice, may, in addition to any other penalty or punishment imposed by law, be fined not more than $100.00 for each offense. 2-84-300 Resisting police officer or aiding escape - Penalty. (a) Any person who knowingly shall resist or obstruct the performance by one known to the person to be a peace officer of any authorized act within his official capacity or shall knowingly interfere or prevent a peace officer from discharging his duty as such officer and whoever shall in any manner knowingly assist any person in the custody of any member of the police department to escape or attempt to escape from such custody, shall be fined not less than $25.00 nor more than $500.00. (b) For the purposes of this section "resist" shall mean passive as well as active resistance. (Prior code § 11-33)
