San José Municipal Code § 20.200.060
in effect"Adult motion picture theater" is a building or portion thereof or area, open or enclosed, used for the presentation of motion pictures distinguished or characterized by an emphasis on matter depicting, describing or relating to "specified sexual activities" or "specified anatomical areas," as hereinafter defined, for observation by patrons or customers.
