Free ordinance search for your town
A free search of your town’s ordinances, for your residents, on your own website. For town and city clerks and staff.
What we give you, free
- Your ordinances, digitized. We turn your ordinances into searchable text, including scanned PDFs.
- A search box for your website. Once your files are in and published, it answers residents’ questions from your own code, with a citation to the section each answer comes from.
- A zoning map you can embed, if you have zoning map files.
What we ask in return
- Your current ordinance files, and your zoning map files if you have them.
- Your permission to publish them on Corpus.
Both sides sign a short one-page agreement (an MOU) that says what is shared and what is published.
The terms, in plain words
- It costs your town nothing. There is nothing to buy, and no exclusivity.
- You can publish your code anywhere else you like.
- Our copy is labelled unofficial and links to your official source. Your official code controls.
- Links to Corpus’s paid services stay off on your website unless you turn them on.
- Nothing we receive from you includes residents’ personal information.
- Questions typed into the search box are handled under our privacy policy (corpuslaw.us/privacy) and are not sold.
- Either side can end the agreement with written notice.
See it working
- A demonstration for Batesville, Mississippi: a page we built for the town before we had its files. It is labelled as a preview and is not Batesville’s official website.
- The search box on a demonstration town website: a sample page laid out like a town’s site, with the search box installed. It is labelled as a demonstration and is not the official website of Philadelphia, Mississippi.
- Zoning maps Corpus built from each city’s public map data. They are not official city maps: Jackson, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Clara, Seattle.
Embed code
Once your files are published we send you the lines below with your key filled in (and, for the map, your town’s code). Paste each where you want it on your site.
The search box
Add this to your pages. It shows a button at the lower right that opens the search box. We issue the key.
<script async src="https://corpuslaw.us/widget/widget.js" data-corpus-key="pk_live_YOUR_KEY"></script>
The zoning map
Add this where you want the map. YOUR-CODE is your town’s short code, such as CA-SAC for Sacramento. The map shows no links to Corpus’s paid services unless you add ?formation=1 to its address.
<iframe src="https://corpuslaw.us/embed/zoning/YOUR-CODE" width="100%" height="600" style="border:0" loading="lazy" title="Your town zoning map"></iframe>
